Repository & Self-Archiving Policy
The journal supports self-archiving as part of the dissemination and traceability of scholarly work. Authors may deposit and make available manuscript versions through scholarly repositories according to the status of each version.
This policy covers the Preprint, Author's Accepted Manuscript (AAM), and Version of Record (VoR). Each archived version must be identified accurately to avoid ambiguity regarding its peer review, acceptance, or final publication status.
Self-Archiving Principles
Authors may self-archive manuscripts and articles without seeking additional permission from the journal, provided that their deposit and dissemination comply with the requirements set out on this page.
Self-archiving is governed by the following principles:
- no embargo period applies to the versions permitted for deposit;
- the status of each version must be clearly identified;
- information concerning the official publication must be added after the article is published;
- the Version of Record must remain traceable as the official version published by the journal; and
- self-archiving does not alter the copyright, licensing, or official publication status of the article.
Author self-archiving is distinct from the journal's own digital archiving and preservation activities. Requirements concerning the continuity and preservation of the journal's publication record follow Archiving & Digital Preservation.
Versions Eligible for Archiving
Authors may archive the following three versions of a manuscript or article.
Preprint is the manuscript version prior to peer review and before an acceptance decision has been issued by the journal. A Preprint may be archived without embargo. It must be clearly identified as a manuscript that has not yet undergone the journal's peer review process.
Depositing a Preprint in a repository is not considered prior journal publication and does not by itself prevent submission of the manuscript to the journal. After the article is published, the Preprint record should be updated with the citation and DOI of the final article where repository functionality permits.
Author's Accepted Manuscript (AAM) is the manuscript version that has completed peer review and revision and has been accepted for publication, but has not yet received the journal's layout, galley, pagination, production identity, or final formatting. The AAM may be archived immediately after acceptance without embargo.
The deposited version must be identified as the Author's Accepted Manuscript and not as the Version of Record.
Version of Record (VoR) is the final version of the article officially published by the journal after completion of all editorial and production processes. The Version of Record may be archived immediately after publication without embargo.
An archived copy of the Version of Record must retain the identity of the final publication and must not be modified and subsequently represented as the journal's Version of Record.
Deposit Locations and Timing
Authors may deposit permitted versions in:
- institutional repositories;
- subject or disciplinary repositories;
- repositories required or provided by research funders;
- other appropriate scholarly repositories; or
- other academic storage services that allow the status and source of the document to be clearly identified.
A Preprint may be deposited before or during submission and peer review. An Author's Accepted Manuscript may be deposited after the manuscript has received an acceptance decision. The Version of Record may be deposited after the article has been officially published.
Identification, Attribution, and Link to Publication
Each deposited version must include information appropriate to the status of that document.
After the article is published, authors must, where repository functionality permits:
- provide the article title and author names as they appear in the final publication;
- identify the journal as the official publication venue;
- provide available bibliographic information;
- provide the DOI or a link to the Version of Record; and
- retain clear identification distinguishing the Preprint, Author's Accepted Manuscript, and Version of Record.
A Preprint or Author's Accepted Manuscript must not be presented as though it were the Version of Record.
Where the Version of Record is used for self-archiving, the deposited copy must preserve traceability to the official article published by the journal. A translation, adaptation, or other modified version must not be represented as the Version of Record.
Requirements concerning copyright, reuse, attribution, and article licensing follow Copyright & Licensing.
Record Updates and Related Policies
Where a published article subsequently receives a correction, retraction, or other change in publication status, authors must, to the extent that the repository record remains under their control and repository functionality permits, update the metadata or accompanying information so that users are directed to the current publication status.
Such updates may include a link to the Version of Record, correction notice, retraction notice, or other official information published by the journal.
Changes to the scholarly record after publication are handled in accordance with Corrections, Retractions, & Withdrawals.
Requirements concerning access to articles follow the Open Access Policy, while copyright and reuse licensing follow Copyright & Licensing. Journal-level archiving and preservation follow Archiving & Digital Preservation.
